The state sales tax rate in Virginia is 4.3%.
A 1% local option tax is added to the 4.3% state rate everywhere, for 5.3% in most localities. Central Virginia (including Richmond), Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia add a 0.7% regional tax for 6%, and a few localities add more, up to a highest general rate of 7%.
Under Virginia's retail sales and use tax regulations, a person repairing tangible personal property must register and collect the tax, and if the parts, materials and supplies sold are not separately stated, the tax applies to the total charge including repair labor. A contractor on real property work is treated as the consumer of the materials it furnishes.

Virginia Tax assigns each seller a monthly or quarterly sales tax filing frequency based on tax liability. Returns are due on the 20th of the month after the filing period, even with no sales, and must be filed electronically.
