The state sales tax rate in Utah is 4.85%.
The combined rate varies by location because local, county option, transit and other local taxes are added to the 4.85% state rate. The Tax Commission's chart in effect October 1, 2026 lists combined rates from 6.35% to 10.05%.
Per the Tax Commission's Publication 25, repair charges for labor and parts on tangible personal property are subject to sales tax unless the property is exempt. Installation charges for permanently installing property to real property are not part of the sales price when stated separately, and a contractor pays sales tax on materials that become part of real property.

The Division of Professional Licensing licenses HVAC contractors (the H100 classification). Applications on or after April 20, 2026 must meet new requirements, including an HVAC exam and two years of HVAC-specific experience.
Utah law says the state construction trades license and the business license of the licensee's home jurisdiction are the only licenses required to work in a trade licensed under that chapter, and neither the state nor local governments may require additional business licenses or registrations to qualify a licensee, with limited exceptions.
Sellers pay sales tax to the Tax Commission monthly, quarterly or annually, and only monthly filers may take the seller discount, which is 1.31 percent of the combined sales tax.
