The state sales tax rate in South Dakota is 4.2%.
Cities add a municipal sales tax, generally between 1% and 2%, where the customer receives the product or service. A separate 1% municipal gross receipts tax applies to alcohol, restaurants, lodging and admissions, and municipalities can change their taxes only on January 1 or July 1.
South Dakota's sales tax applies to the gross receipts of all retail sales, including the sale of services, unless a service is specifically exempt, and the Department of Revenue's guide gives repair services as an example of a taxed service performed on a product. Construction services taxed under the contractor's excise tax chapters are not subject to sales tax.

The Plumbing Commission licenses qualified plumbers and also sewer and water installers, appliance installers, manufactured and mobile home installers, underground irrigation installers, water conditioning installers and small on-site wastewater installers.
The Electrical Commission administers the state's electrical wiring laws and regulations, inspects wiring installations and licenses all electricians within the state.
A person entering a contract for construction services, or providing services that include the construction, building, installation or repair of a fixture to real property, must have a South Dakota contractor's tax license. The contractor's excise tax on gross receipts for construction projects is 2%.
The 4.2% state rate is a reduction from 4.5% that sunsets on June 30, 2027, and the Codified Laws list the rate as four and one-half percent effective July 1, 2027.
