Rhode Island's sales tax is imposed at 7% of the gross receipts from taxable sales. Eating and drinking establishments must also collect a 1% local meals and beverage tax, and hotel room rentals carry a separate 6% hotel tax.
Rhode Island's contractor guide says a retailer that sells a complete unit of standard equipment and installs it (such as an electrical shop selling and installing fixtures) should state the installation charge separately, because tax applies only to the property's retail price; if it is not stated separately, the entire charge is taxed.

The Department of Labor and Training's Professional Regulation unit licenses plumbers through the Board of Examiners of Plumbers and gives the plumber exams.
