The state sales tax rate in North Carolina is 4.75%.
Counties add local sales and use taxes to the 4.75% state rate, and some include a 0.50% transit tax. The Department of Revenue's July 2026 table lists total county rates from 6.75% to 8.25%.
The Department of Revenue says repair, maintenance and installation services to real property, tangible personal property and motor vehicles are subject to sales tax unless exempt, and installation charges are taxable even when separately stated. The term does not include services used to fulfill a real property contract or an installation that qualifies as a capital improvement.

State law says no person may perform or offer to perform locksmith services in North Carolina unless licensed under the Locksmith Licensing Act, which the North Carolina Locksmith Licensing Board administers.
The State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors licenses plumbing, heating and fire sprinkler contractors in two classes: Class I for all structures and Class II for single-family detached homes.
No person or business may engage in electrical contracting in North Carolina without a license in the applicable classification from the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors.
Heating work, including systems that heat or cool a building, is licensed by the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, and refrigeration contractors must hold a license from the State Board of Refrigeration Contractors.
Mecklenburg County added an extra 1.00% local sales and use tax on July 1, 2026, raising its total general rate from 7.25% to 8.25%; retailers collect it on retail sales sourced to the county.
For a capital improvement (a real property contract), the contractor is treated as the consumer of the materials it buys and installs and pays the sales tax on them; an Affidavit of Capital Improvement (Form E-589CI) generally must be issued and kept on file.
