Plumbing: Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters — Division of Occupational Licensure

Only a master or journeyman plumber examined and licensed by the Board, with permits from the local plumbing inspector, can perform plumbing work at a home or business. The Board's fact sheet says Massachusetts law prohibits anyone but a licensed professional from installing, removing or repairing plumbing.

Electrical: Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians — Division of Occupational Licensure

The Board's mission is to protect Massachusetts citizens by setting standards for electrical work; it licenses electricians, enforces regulations and handles appeals on inspection decisions.

HVAC / air conditioning: Massachusetts Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers and Office of Public Safety and Inspections — Division of Occupational Licensure

State licenses that apply to HVAC-related work include the sheet metal license, issued by the Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers to those who fabricate and install building ventilation systems including ductwork, and the refrigeration technician license, required for refrigeration work over 10 tons in the aggregate.

More facts for Massachusetts service businesses

Massachusetts vendors must separately state and separately charge the sales tax on all invoices, bills, displays or contracts.

Massachusetts plumbers and other contractors who work on real property are generally the consumers of the materials they buy for a contract and pay sales or use tax on them; a plumber who sells material and charges separately for installation collects tax on the material price but not on the separately stated labor.

Massachusetts sales and use tax returns are due on or before the 30th day after the period: monthly if $1,201 or more is collected per year, quarterly for $101 to $1,200, and annually for $100 or less.
