The state sales tax rate in Indiana is 7%.

The Department of Revenue says the sales tax for the entire State of Indiana is 7%. Its county tax page lists only the innkeeper's tax, food and beverage tax and local income tax at the county level, and some municipalities also have their own food and beverage tax.

Repair, installation and labor

The Department's bulletin says repair charges on tangible personal property are generally exempt as a service when separately stated from the materials used in the repair. If they are not separately stated, the repair labor can be taxable when the parts are more than 10% of the overall charge; work on real property follows separate contractor rules.

More facts for Indiana service businesses

A contractor working under a time and material contract is a retail merchant that collects sales tax on the material portion of the job; under a lump sum contract, the contractor pays tax on its materials and does not charge customers sales tax. The bulletin lists plumbing, heating and cooling, and electrical work among contractor trades.

In the Department's repair example where the repair charge is exempt, the repair company still owes sales or use tax on the part it used to make the repair.
