What is the sales tax in California?

State rate: 7.25%

The state sales tax rate in California is 7.25%.

In most areas local district taxes of 0.10% to 2.00% are added to the 7.25% statewide rate, and some areas have more than one, so the combined rate depends on the location. CDTFA publishes rates by city and a lookup by address.

Repair, installation and labor

CDTFA Regulation 1546 leaves labor charges for installing the property sold out of the taxable amount. A repairer who charges separately for parts, or whose parts exceed 10% of the total charge, is the retailer of those parts, and above 10% the invoice must separate the parts' retail price from labor.

Who licenses locksmiths and the trades in California?

Locksmiths: California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS)

Locksmith companies must be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, and locksmith employees must register with it. BSIS also notes that a contractor's license (C-28, C-61 or D-16) is required for work at a single site above a set dollar amount.

Plumbing: California Contractors State License Board (CSLB)

CSLB licenses plumbing contractors under the C-36 classification, whose scope includes water supply, waste disposal, gas and liquid piping, and gas appliance connections.

Electrical: California Contractors State License Board (CSLB)

CSLB licenses electrical contractors under the C-10 classification, covering the placing, installing, erecting or connecting of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, raceways and conduits.

HVAC / air conditioning: California Contractors State License Board (CSLB)

CSLB licenses warm-air heating, ventilating and air-conditioning contractors (C-20) and refrigeration contractors (C-38).
